About us
The Femtor/Mentor Colectiva seeks to support undergraduate Raza students succeed in their academic careers, achieve their personal goals and aspirations, and encourage them to take the next step in their development (whether graduate/professional school or as practitioners in their communities). We seek to create a space, not just for academic mentoring, but also for camaraderie, a sense of community, guidance, bonding, and support in order to motivate each other as we strive to achieve our goals as students and future professionals and practitioners in our communities. We work with undergraduate students at all levels, from beginning freshmen and new transfer students to seniors and super seniors, as well as students from all other racial/ethnic backgrounds who would like to join.
What distinguishes our program from others on campus is our informal and organic approach to building a personal bond with undergraduate students in order to support their academic and personal development. Given the high numbers of Raza students who drop out from their undergraduate programs, we seek to strengthen, guide, and provide the support needed for mentees to graduate and also to foster their passion and interests beyond academia. Our Colectiva seeks to supplement and collaborate with other UCB mentorship programs and student support services by connecting our mentees to their academic workshops and programs that prepare them for graduate school.
Our femtors/mentors are at different stages of their graduate and/or professional careers and are from diverse disciplines and backgrounds. Our vision is for femtors/mentors to develop a personal relationship with their mentees, to learn from each other’s experiences, and to provide strategies to thrive as undergraduate students and prepare for graduate and/or professional school. The commitment between femtors/mentors and mentees will be to connect with each other regularly and to meet at least once a month to check-in in person.
The Raza Femtor/Mentor Colectiva stems from the Graduate Students de la Raza (GSRza), a graduate student group on campus that seeks to build community among Raza graduate and undergraduate students as well as with Raza spaces on campus.
